Woodbury Football Defeats Wayzata, Advances in Playoffs

The Woodbury Royals football team defeated the Wayzata Trojans 16-14 Friday evening to advance in the Class 6A playoffs.

Woodbury took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter behind two field goals from senior kicker Cade Keesling.

Later in the second, Wayzata scored on a deep touchdown pass to senior tight end Nicholas Kallerup to put the Trojans up 7-6.

Woodbury responded with a 54-yard touchdown run from junior running back Brock Rinehart to put the Royals back up 13-7 in the third. 

Wayzata then answered with a 79-yard touchdown run from junior running back Malaki Jackson to go back up 14-13 with just under three minutes left in the third quarter. 

Keesling put Woodbury up 16-14 with just over eight minutes left in the game with his third field goal of the game. The Royals held on to that lead to win the game and advance to state quarterfinals against Lakeville South next Friday at Osseo High School.
