State Girls Hockey: Warroad Coasts 5-0 in Quarter Finals

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Top-seeded Warroad (23-3-2) produced an efficient 5-0 victory over New Ulm (23-5-1) on Wednesday evening in the MSHSL Class A Girls Hockey Tournament quarterfinal at Xcel Energy Center.

The Warriors advance to the state semifinals on Friday at 1 p.m. at Xcel Energy Center against the No. 5 St. Paul United / No. 4 Alexandria Area contest while New Ulm will take on the losing team from that matchup in the consolation bracket on Thursday at noon at Ridder Arena at the University of Minnesota.

It was a methodical effort for Warroad, scoring a goal in the first and two each in the second and third periods. The lead swelled from 3-0 to 5-0 in a span of just 10 seconds in the fifth minute of the third period to put the game away.

Warroad used a balanced offensive attack to put up five goals against a New Ulm team that had allowed just six total goals during its seven game winning streak to reach the state tournament. Hannah Corneliusen had a two goal performance with a game high nine shots while Madison Oelkers had a two point game with a goal and an assist on six shots.

Warrior goalie Quinn Kuntz produced a shutout in the net with 20 saves including nine in the third period.

New Ulm goalie Cassie Reed saved 30 shots in the game, including 13 of 15 in a busy second period.
