While pre-draft press conferences are famously thin on specific information, Spielman did take the opportunity to address some over-arcing issues facing the team as they head into the 2019 Draft this week - which he evaluates as deep in talent.

"I think there’s a lot of deep positions in this class," Spielman said. "I think when we looked at our front board, this is the most number of players we have that we think are draftable. I don’t think every team has 234 draft picks and say 234 players are draftable."

Spielman joked about the Vikings trend under Mike Zimmer of selecting cornerbacks early in the draft.

"Everybody has angst," he joked. "My wife ... she said, 'If you draft another corner, don’t come home. You can just stay at the office'."

There were several questions about specific players, notably quarterback Kirk Cousins.

"I think Kirk, just being around him for a year, I’ve never seen a guy work at it as hard as he does," Spielman said. "He was the first one in the building when they were allowed back in the building. He is non-stop all afternoon in that film room. I know the time and energy he puts in to be successful and to guide this franchise."

Spielman also offered an update on last year's top draft pick, Mike Hughes - who is recovering from a torn ACL.

"He’s running. It’s a process," Spielman said. "He’s a little ahead of schedule, but we’ve got a long way to go. But I know he’s been here all off season working extremely hard at it."
