Mauer, who announced his retirement in early November, joins Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew, Tony Oliva, Kent Hrbek, Kirby Puckett, Bert Blyleven and Tom Kelly as having their numbers retired by the organization.

The Twins also retired Jackie Robinson's number in conjunction with all of Major League Baseball in 1997.

Mauer, a St. Paul native, is the team's all-time leader in doubles (428) and times on base (3,087), and ranks second in games (1,858), hits (2,123) and walks (939). He is also among the club's all-time leaders in RBI (fifth) and home runs (11th).

He was the 2009 American League MVP and was named to the all-star team six teams. He also earned three Gold Gloves as a catcher and won three American League batting titles.

The Twins selected the Cretin-Derham Hall graduate with the first overall pick in the 2001 Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

"The Minnesota Twins organization has been blessed to have Joe Mauer part of our franchise since 2001," Twins Executive Chair Jim Pohlad said in a statement.

"Few players have achieved more on the field, or given back more off the field than Joe. With Joe's storied career in mind, the Twins family is proud to bestow our highest honor with the retirement of his jersey - number 7. We are excited to celebrate Joe's excellence, commitment to this community and special relationship with Twins Territory."
