The Minnesota Twins will hire Rocco Baldelli to be the team's 14th manager since the franchise relocated from Washington.

He succeeds Paul Molitor, who was released following a 78-84 season.

A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed Baldelli's hiring to KSTP Sports early Thursday morning. The official announcement will come at a press conference at 3:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

The Twins also considered their own bench coach Derek Shelton and Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde for the position.

At 37, Baldelli becomes the youngest manager in Major League Baseball. He also interviewed for the vacant manager jobs in Toronto and Texas.

Baldelli has been working as an assistant with the Tampa Bay Rays the last several years after playing seven Major League seasons from 2003-2010, all but one with the Rays. He spent one season with the Red Sox and missed the entire 2005 season due to injury.

He retired in 2010 at age 29 after battling a muscular disorder the last six years of his pro career.

He was Tampa's first round draft pick in 2000, quickly advanced to the majors and finished third in MLB's Rookie of the Year voting in 2003.

Baldelli grew up in Rhode Island and was nicknamed "The Woonsocket Rocket" early in his career.

[NOTE: A previous version of this story stated Baldelli is the 13th manager since the Twins relocated from Washington. Manager Cookie Lavagetto was the incumbent manager when the team moved and was not counted in the initial tally.]
