One-on-One With Lynx All-Star Sylvia Fowles

August 14, 2017 07:45 AM

When Sylvia Fowles arrived in the Twin Cities, the Minnesota Lynx already had Lindsay Whalen, Maya Moore, Seimone Augustus and Rebekkah Brunson. Plus, they had already won two WNBA Championships. That's not the easiest circle to step into, but Fowles made the transition look smooth.

About the only thing that doesn't come easy for the former WNBA Defensive Player of the Year is deciding on a nickname.

"I hate the name Big Syl," Fowles told KSTP's Chris Long, "I got the name Big Syl in college. It made it feel like I was fat. Maybe if they said Long Syl, Tall Syl. Big Syl just didn't sit right with me."

Among the other nicknames she's acquired over the years: Green Giant, Baby Shaq and Silly Syl. There is one everyone should avoid even more than Big Syl.

"My mom called me Sugar Lips," Fowles remembers, "Don't use that, people!"

Fowles is second in the league in scoring (20.5 ppg) and rebounding (10.1 rpg) this season and she is tops in field goal percentage (.675), so what we probably will be able to use at the end of the year, is calling Sylvia Fowles the WNBA MVP.
