Stillwater Beats Blaine to Advance to State Championship

June 15, 2018 06:50 PM

Stillwater rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Blaine, 4-3, and advance to the Class AAAA championship game. The Ponies (23-3) needed two run rallies in the sixth and seventh innings to win their 19th straight game.

The Ponies will face Minnetonka at Target Field on Saturday, June 16 at 7:00 p.m.

Stillwater starter Will Frisch allowed just one hit but walked nine batters and struck out seven in 4.2 innings of work. Cody Venske, who went the final 2.1 innings, was the winning pitcher for Stillwater.

The Bengals (22-4) nursed a 2-0 lead into the 6th inning. Gilbert tripled home one run and Frisch's sacrifice fly tied the game to set up a wild 7th frame.

Mason Schwewrzler opened the inning with a single. With one out, pinch hitter Benjamin Borrman was safe on an error with Schwerzler taking third. Luke Simcik then bunted for a single to score Schwerzler. A throwing error on the play moved the runners up a base and a wild pitch produced a second run.

The Bengals responded quickly in their at-bat. Mike Gottschalk and Connor Melton singled. With two outs, Tony Strand was safe on an error to load the bases. Joey Messier singled one run in but Venske sealed the Ponies' first trip to a MSHSL baseball championship game since 2009 by striking out Jack Haring to end the game.

Blaine will face St. Michael-Albertville for third place at CHS Field.
