SMB football team primed for another state championship run

Updated: August 14, 2019 04:18 PM

The SMB football team has plenty of senior leadership with Jalen Suggs, Kaden Johnson, and Terry Lockett that will give the team a good chance of repeating as state champions.

SMB is a combination of players from St. Paul Academy, Minnehaha Academy and Blake Academy. That combination has provided for some special football, including the Class 4A title game last year when SMB defeated Willmar, 44-18. Senior quarterback Jalen Suggs had a special day, including accouting five touchdowns, one of them while playing defense in the form of a pick-six.

Kaden Johnson is a dual threat as a tight end and a difference-maker on defense as a strong-side linebacker.

One key addition is senior wide receiver Terry Lockett. Lockett left Minnehaha Academy after his sophomore year to play for Spire Academy near Cleveland,Ohio. He rejoins best friends Suggs and Johnson for their senior year.

"These are my brothers. We went through so much last year, so much adversity, we weren't pegged to win it all, and we've been through so much. I've played with some of these guys since I was 3-4 years old, so we wanted to come out for our senior season and end it the right way," said Suggs.

Chris Goodwin is the new SMB head coach. He last served as the team's offensive coordinator. He knows the expectations are to repeat as champions, but in order to do that a lot of factors need to line up.

"Our section is the toughest in the state with Holy Angels, Benilde-St. Margaret's and other schools we'll need to play. We have to get through our section first and that's the big challenge and stay healthy too," said Goodwin.
