January 14, 2019 09:25 PM

It was hard to tell who was more excited about Ryan Saunders winning his first game as the interim head coach of the Timberwolves, Ryan or the players.

To those who know him best, seeing Ryan as a head coach was not a surprise.

"He was destined to be a coach," former teammate and roommate with the Gophers, Spencer Tollackson told KSTP. "From a knowledge perspective, he could run an NBA drill when he was 12 years old."

Former Timberwolves center Cole Aldrich has known Ryan since he was in high school and he says Saunders knows how to connect with players.

"He has such a high basketball IQ," Aldrich said. "He's still really young. You look at the roster now, you got a few guys older than him on the team. That's not going to be a problem at all because he's gonna know how and when to push buttons and when to take a seat back."

Ryan followed in his father's footsteps and played for the Gophers in college. His head coach at the U was Dan Monson who had some words of encouragement for Saunders.

"I hope you know how proud your former coach is and how proud your dad would be. Make the most of it and best of luck."
