Rochester Lourdes staked its claim as the top Class AAA team in the past decade following a 24-7 victory over Fairmont in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 24 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Eagles (14-0) used a 17-point spree over the final quarter-and-a-half to record their fourth championship since 2010. In that span, Rochester Lourdes and St. Croix Lutheran were tied with three Class AAA crowns apiece. Rochester Lourdes captured titles in 2010, 2014 and 2016. The Eagles also won the Class A championship in 1979. St. Croix Lutheran won Class AAA championships in 2011, 2013 and 2017.

Rochester Lourdes broke that deadlock behind a potent running attack that churned out 327 yards and produced three touchdowns. Senior running back Zach Jungels led the Eagles with 234 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns. He averaged 8.6 yards per carry. Senior running back Jake Groteboer chipped in 76 yards and his own rushing touchdown.

Senior kicker Ben Limburg snapped a 7-all tie with 4:33 left in the third quarter when he easily made a 36-yard field goal. Six minutes earlier, Fairmont had forged a 7-7 tie when senior quarterback Garrett Myren and senior tight end Thomas Johnson connected on a 56-yard scoring strike.

With a three-point cushion, Jungels and the Rochester Lourdes defense took over. Jungels had a 50-yard touchdown run one minute into the fourth quarter, and in the closing minutes, he punctuated the Eagles’ latest championship with a 22-yard that set the score.

Senior running back Jordan Wolter had 110 rushing yards on 22 carries for the Cardinals (11-2), who were attempting to win a football state championship for the first time in school history. Fairmont was the Class AAA runner-up in 2011 to St. Croix Lutheran.
