The coaching staff surrounding new Timberwolves head coach Ryan Saunders is still being put together. But, on Thursday, the organization filled one spot.

According to a report from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Timberwolves are hiring David Vanterpool as the lead assistant to Saunders. Vanterpool comes from the Portland Trailblazers, and played a prominent role in the growth of NBA superstars Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum.

Wojnarowski said Vanterpool is expected to run the defense and play a key role in support of Saunders.

Vanterpool has been a coach for the Trailblazers since the 2012 season, and prior to that, he spent five seasons as an assistant coach overseas for CSKA Moscow. His name was one that came up during the team's search for the head coach position before Saunders was chosen.

Vanterpool was also mentioned as a candidate for head coaching openings this offseason in Cleveland, Phoenix and Memphis.
