No. 8 UMD Notches Season's First Series Sweep, Defeating No. 20 Gophers 2-0

Hunter Shepard recorded his first shutout of the season, helping lead the eighth ranked UMD men's hockey team to their 2-0 win over No. 20 Minnesota in Duluth Saturday.

UMD won game one Friday in Minneapolis 5-2. This is UMD's first series sweep so far this season. 


Bulldog freshman Quinn Olson scored his first career goal six minutes into the first period. Freshman Brandon Puricelli, and sophomore Jesse Jacques each assisted on the play. It was Puricelli's first career assist.

UMD wouldn't score their second goal until the third period. Jackson Cates scored with under a minute left of the game.

Goalie Hunter Shepard had 21 saves for UMD, including his first shutout of the season. 

Goaltender Jared Moe had 21 stops for Minnesota.

Next, Minnesota (3-3) will open a series with Notre Dame at home. Puck drop is set for Friday at 7 p.m.

Next, UMD (3-3) will play host to No. 1 Denver (6-0-0) to open National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) competition with a two-game series at AMSOIL Arena beginning Friday, Nov. 8. Opening face-off is set for just after 7 p.m.
