He sank the putt that gave the Gophers the NCAA Men's Golf Championship in 2002, now Justin Smith will try to help today's Gophers reach that same level of success.

After five years as an assistant with the program, Smith was named head coach last month.

That 2002 natinoal title came in the middle of a three-year run of NCAA Finals appearances for Smith and the Gophers.

Smith was inducted into the Gophers' 'M' Club Hall of Fame in 2018. He's only the ninth men's golfer to make the Hall of Fame.

The current team has shown signs of breaking through.

Sophomore Angus Flanagan was the Big Ten Champion last year, and since Smith signed on as an assistant, Minnesota has earned a top-three finish at the Big Ten Championships, four PING All-Region honorees, three NCAA Regional participants and a pair of All-Big Ten selections.
