Twins acquire pitcher Sam Dyson from Giants in deadline deal

The Minnesota Twins acquired right-handed relief pitcher Sam Dyson from the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday in a trade deadline deal. The team announced outfielder Jaylin Davis and right-handed pitchers Prelander Berroa and Kai-Wei Teng, all minor leaguers, were sent to the Giants as part of the deal.

Dyson, 31, has appeared in 49 games for the Giants this season, going 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA (51.0 IP, 14 ER), two saves, 17 holds, seven walks, 47 strikeouts, a WHIP of 0.90 and an opponent batting average of .213. Dyson has appeared in 364 career major league games in parts of eight seasons with Toronto, Miami, Texas and San Francisco, going 23-23 with a 3.29 ERA (375.1 IP, 137 ER), 59 saves, 123 walks and 302 strikeouts.

Orgininally drafted in the fourth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft by Toronto out of the University of South Carolina, Dyson has appeared in at least 70 games in three of the last four seasons, entering 2019, and has appeared in 326 games since the start of 2015, tied for third most in baseball.

Davis, 25, split the 2019 season between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Rochester, hitting .298 (109-for-366) with 20 doubles, 25 home runs and 67 RBI in 99 games. Berroa, 19, made seven starts for the Elizabethton Twins this season, going 2-1 with a 4.55 ERA (31.2 IP, 16 ER), 16 walks and 37 strikeouts. Teng, 20, appeared in nine games (8 starts) for Single-A Cedar Rapids this season, going 4-0 with a 1.60 ERA (50.2 IP, 9 ER), 14 walks and 49 strikeouts.

The Twins held a three-game lead over the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central entering Wednesday.
