The hometown boy is hanging it up.
Joe Mauer made it official Friday, he is retiring after 15 seasons with the Minnesota Twins, the team has confirmed.
A letter from Mauer was posted to the team's website on Friday.
"After much consideration, I have decided to retire from playing baseball," it read. "This decision did not come easily as baseball always has been, and always will be, one of my greatest passions. The last few months of this season were very emotional for me and I wanted to take time to separate some of those emotions and think with a clear frame of mind."
A press conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Target Field.
Speculation about Mauer's retirement was rampant down the final stretch of last season, and he all but confirmed the rumors when he put on the mask and mitt to catch in the ninth inning of the team's regular-season finale.
Mauer was drafted No. 1 overall by the Twins in 2001 and made his first MLB appearance in 2004. The St. Paul native and Cretin-Derham Hall grad spent his entire career with the Twins, serving as the team's long-time catcher until 2013, when he was moved to first base, a move brought on by a concussion.
And Mauer said the decision to retire was motivated by health and family.
"The risk of a concussion is always there, and I was reminded of that this season after missing over 30 games as a result of diving for a foul ball," the letter read. "That's all it took this time around and it was all I needed to bring me back to the struggles I faced in 2013."
Mauer was named the AL MVP in 2009, won three batting titles and three consecutive Gold Glove awards.
In his final at-bat for the Twins, Mauer hit an opposite-field double.
"Thank you Minnesota Twins, and thank you fans, for making my career as special and memorable as it was," the letter concluded. "Because of you I can leave the game I love with a full and grateful heart."
