Mahtomedi prepares for Boys' State Hockey Tournament

The Mahtomedi boys' hockey program is no stranger to the State Hockey Tournament. This is the 11th season the Zephyrs have made the tournament, and after putting together a 21-6-1 record, they earned the #1 seed in Class A.

"Our whole objective in putting the schedule together is to try to make the regular season as difficult as possible," Mahtomedi head coach Jeff Poeschl said on Monday. "You'll probably have some L's in that column, but you're prepared now. You know what it is to play with that kind of intensity."

Mahtomedi's history once they reach the tournament hasn't been great. I those 11 appearances, they've never reached a championship game.

"We've been close before. We've knocked on the door. Our attitude this year has been we don't want to knock on the door, we want to bust the door down," Poeschl said.

The Zephyrs bring a balanced scoring attack to the state tourney with six players tallying double-digit goals during the season.

"We have talent," Mahtomedi senior defenseman Tommy Broten said. "Its not like we have just one stacked line. We have depth on our team.  We're the first Mahtomedi team to go to the tourney three times in a row."

The Zephyrs have two dependable goalies in John Poirer and Ben Dardis. Dardis is only a freshman and started two of their section playoff games including a 22-save shutout against Totino-Grace in the championship game.

"I've been impressed with his his demeanor and his ability to handle whatever comes his way," Coach Poeschl said about Dardis. "I'm confident in his ability to handle the bright lights and all that comes with the state tournament. I'm actually excited to put him on display for the state to see."

Mahtomedi plays New Ulm (17-8-1) in the Class A quarterfinals at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday night at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

You can watch all the State Hockey games live on 45TV in the Twin Cities, or stream them free on from anywhere.
