Hopkins stays perfect, beats Lakeville North in 4A girls hoops quarterfinal

Top-ranked and top-seeded Hopkins continued its pursuit of an undefeated season and a championship to go with it following a 68-46 victory over Lakeville North in the Class AAAA quarterfinals on Wednesday at Williams Arena on the University of Minnesota campus.

Junior point guard Paige Bueckers, the nation’s No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2020, scored 29 points and added four assists, two blocks and a steal to send the Royals (30-0) into the big-school semifinals on Thursday.

Senior guard Dlayla Chakolis and freshman guard Maya Nnaji chipped in 13 points apiece in fueling the Royals, who held a 12-point advantage at the half. Hopkins built a 33-21 advantage at the half behind 13 points from Bueckers and 10 from Nnaji. The Royals shot 53.8 percent from the field in the opening 18 minutes.

Hopkins’ pressure defense contributed to Lakeville North (18-12) committing 24 turnovers. Senior guard Analiese Tschida paced the Panthers with 20 points. Junior guard Lauren Jensen added nine points. 

It was the second meeting between the two teams during the 2018-19 season. On Nov. 27, Hopkins raced to an 83-41 victory when the Royals and Panthers were ranked Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in Class AAAA.
