The Academy of Holy Angels (11-1) has finished as runner-up two of the last four years, in Class 4A. They will get a chance to win a championship when they face the winner of the South St. Paul-Cloquet semifinal.

Star’s quarterback Joseph Heimbold scored his third touchdown on a 23 yard run up the middle with 3:50 left in the game to give Holy Angels a 26-22 victory over the previously unbeaten Winhawks. Winona had taken a 22-19 lead on a 13 play, 85 yard drive just three minutes earlier.

Heimbold carried the ball 27 times for 145 yards. He also threw for 77 yards in leading the offensive attack for Holy Angels. Thomas Shelstad also surpassed the 100 yards mark for the Stars, 115 yards on 15 attempts.

Winona’s Riley Bosteter threw for 311 yards and one touchdown. He almost put Winona back on top when on third down and 36 from his own five yard line he completed a 70 yard pass to Ethan Ringo, who was tripped by Peter Laird in at the Star’s 25 yard line. Two plays later Bosteter had his pass intercepted by Keontay Shorter to end Winona’s drive and their championship hopes.
