Holy Angels edges Fergus Falls in girls hoops state quarterfinals

The four versus five quarterfinal lived up to its billing as #4 Holy Angels (22-7) snuck past #5 Fergus Falls (23-5) with a 58-57 win on Wednesday afternoon at Maturi Pavilion on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

The Stars head to the state semifinals and will play top seed DeLaSalle on Thursday, March 14 at noon at Williams Arena while the Otters will play Hibbing in the consolation semifinals on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia University, St. Paul.

Fergus Falls had the final possession but couldn’t get a shot off in the closing seconds.

Freshman Kassandra Caron led the Stars with 20 points on just 10 shots in 26 minutes off the bench, making 8-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the arc, adding four steals including the game-clinching steal at the horn.

Sophomore Francesca Vascellaro added 19 points and eight rebounds for Holy Angels.

Fergus Falls freshman guard Ellie Colbeck led the Otters with 20 points including five three-pointers, five assists and five rebounds. Senior Lily Pearson chipped in a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
