Greenway rallies to beat Delano 6-4 in Class A State Hockey Quarterfinal

No. 4 seed Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin edged No. 5 Delano, 6-4, in the last Class A quarterfinal game on Wednesday at Xcel Energy Center. 

The Raiders spread out their attack with nine different players factoring into the scoring. They were led by senior forward Donte Lawson with two goals and two assists, giving him 29 and 26 on the year, respectively. Senior forward Nikolai Rajala also had two assists for the Raiders, giving him 23 for the season.

Delano came out quickly scoring two goals early in the first period and held a 3-1 lead after the opening period. The Raiders answered with two second period goals, tying the game at 3-3. Delano junior forward Kory Dunnigan scored his second goal to take a 4-3 lead in the third. But, then it was all Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin. Junior forward Mitchell Vekich scored the tying goal and less than a minute later teammate junior defenseman Christian Miller scored the game-winning goal. An empty net goal off the stick of Lawson solidified the win for the Raiders. 

The Raiders finished the game with a 39-25 advantage in the final shot tally, including a decisive 17-7 margin in the second period. 

Raiders junior goalie Logan Wright stopped 21 shots in the victory while Delano senior goalie Aaron Kruse had 33 saves for the Tigers. 

Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin will head to the semifinals against Mahtomedi on Friday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m. at Xcel Energy Center. Delano, competing in its second tournament appearance, will play New Ulm on Thursday at noon in the consolation semifinals at 3M Arena at Mariucci on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.
