Grand Rapids' McLaughlin Gets Ready for NHL Draft

June 20, 2018 02:00 PM

The 2018 NHL Draft begins Friday night in Dallas and Grand Rapids native Blake McLaughlin should be one of the first Minnesotans to hear his name called.

He ranks among the top-25 American-born skaters. McLaughlin won a state championship at Grand Rapids during his junior season, but played for Chicago in the USHL last year. He's a left winger who's considered an excellent playmaker.

McLaughlin talked with 25 different NHL teams leading up to the draft. He senses that Colorado and Winnipeg like him a lot.

"It's hard to mentally prepare for a job interview like that," McLaughlin told KSTP's Darren Wolfson. "The questions are kind of tough. It gets to be a grind."

No matter where he goes in the draft, he'll suit up for Bob Motzko and the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers next year.
