Minnesota will play Auburn in the Outback Bowl, the U of M announced on Sunday.

The bowl game will take place Jan. 1 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, and air at 1 p.m. on ESPN. It will be the first ever meeting between Minnesota and Auburn.

The Gophers were looking like a likely candidate for the Rose Bowl after getting out to a 9-0 start that included a marquee win over then-No. 5 Penn State, but late-season losses to Iowa and Wisconsin dashed those hopes.

Auburn finished the season 9-3, and all its losses came at the hands of top-10 opponents. Auburn's momentous win over Alabama in the last week of the regular season jettisoned the Crimson Tide from the College Football Playoff discussion and shored up Auburn's chances at a high-end New Year's Day bowl game.

This will be Minnesota's first trip to the Outback Bowl. Auburn has played in four editions of the Outback Bowl. The Tigers' most recent trip was in 2015, when they fell to Wisconsin 34-31 in overtime.
