Gophers sophomore quarterback Zach Annexstad suffered a foot injury during practice on Friday and will be out indefinitely, the team announced on Saturday.

"Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game, and we feel terrible for Zack," Gophers Head Coach Fleck said. "He worked extremely hard in the spring and summer to put himself in position to compete for the starting job, and I know he will recover from this setback to be even stronger. Zack is an elite teammate and person, and I look forward to him being an important part of the team as a leader while he is recovering."

Annexstad was battling sophomore Tanner Morgan for the starting quarterback job during their 2019 camp. With the injury to Annexstad, Morgan becomes the clear-cut starter at the beginning of the season.

Annexstad started the first seven games of the 2018 season. He threw for 1,277 yards and nine touchdowns.

The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers open the 2019 season at home against South Dakota State on Thursday, August 29.
