Coach Hugh McCutcheon said avenging a loss to Texas in the 2015 NCAA Final Four would be the farthest thing from the Gopher volleyball team's mind Saturday night. Whether it carried a measure of revenge of not, the #1-ranked Gophers took charge of a buzzing arena in Austin, beating the 5th-ranked Longhorns 3-1.
With the victory, the Gophers remain perfect on the season - having won all eight of their matches.
This weekend's sweep of a three-match tournament in Austin came after the Gophers ascended to the top of the national polls for the first time this season.
The Gophers were led by Stephanie Samedy, who had a match-high 22 kills and hit .308.
Samedy has exploded onto the scene, having had a major impact right away as a freshman.
Alexis Hart had 14 kills, followed by Jasmyn Martin with 11. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 55 assists, while Dalianliz Rosado tied a career-high 27 digs.
As a team, Minnesota outhit the Longhorns, .264 to .202, outblocked them 12-9 and held a 58-54 dig advantage.
Minnesota travels to Boise, Idaho, as the Gophers take on Oregon State, Boise State and Idaho State, Sept. 15-16.
