Gopher commit Striggow leads Orono into 2019 season

Updated: September 02, 2019 10:52 AM

Orono's Danny Striggow had some big decisions to make this summer. Not only was he milling over scholarship offers from multiple universities, he was also choosing from two different sports.

Striggow is a star defensive end for Orono's football team, but he also won a Class AA state championship in wrestling at 220 pounds last school year. Striggow has two older brothers on the University of Michigan wrestling team. But in the end, he committed to the University of Minnesota to play college football.

"I've been wrestling longer than I've been playing football. It's going to be a tough goodbye," Striggow told KSTP's Chris Long. "You can't say no to Big Ten football. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity."

Orono opens the 2019 high school football season on the road against Benilde-St. Margaret's on Friday night.
