Girls' State Hockey Tournament: Eden Prairie Shuts Out Andover 2-0 in AA Quarterfinals

February 22, 2018 10:38 PM

In what was the most tightly contested game of the evening, it was the No. 5 Eden Prairie Eagles who came out on top against the No. 4 Andover Huskies. The Eagles beat the Huskies 1-0 thanks to a third period power play goal.

It was clear from the get go that it was going to be a clean game between to evenly matched teams. After one period of play, Andover and Eden Prairie skated to a 0-0 tie, with the Huskies leading the way in shots 10-7. However, the Eagles were quick to even things up in the shot category early in the second period, as an Andover skater was called for hooking just two minutes in to the new period. Neither team was able to make its mark on the scoreboard as the second period ended the same as the first: the Huskies and Eagles deadlocked in a 0-0 tie.

Eden Prairie final broke through the goose eggs at 15:45 in the period. Not five seconds after an Andover skater was called for roughing, the Eagles Crystalyn Hengler buried a slap shot to the back of the net, giving Eden Prairie the 1-0 lead just 1:15 into the third and final period.

It turned out, that single goal was all the Eagles needed for the victory. For the remaining 15 minutes, Eden Prairie held Andover scoreless and added an insurance empty netter with 1:22 remaining in the game. The Huskies tried to answer but still couldn’t crack Eagle goalie Alexa Dobchuk, resulting in the 2-0 Eden Prairie victory.

With the win, Eden Prairie advances to Friday’s AA Semifinal game against Edina. Andover will play in the Consolation Semifinal at 12 p.m. at Ridder Arena on Friday as well.
