Girls State Hockey: Seven Unanswered Goals Put Warroad Past Alexandria in Class A Semi

The No. 1 Warroad Warriors cruised into the championship game thanks to a 7-1 victory over the No. 4 Alexandria Area Cardinals Friday afternoon. 

Alexandria was the first team to strike, as it took an early 1-0 lead over top-seeded Warroad. Anna Doherty scored at 7:11 in the first period with assists to McKenna Ellingson and Allison O’Kane. The Warriors were quick to even the score. At 15:13 in the first period, Hannah Corneliusen buried a shot in front of the net, evening the score at 1-1 in the latter stages of the first period. 

It was all Warroad in the second period, as the Warriors took a 3-1 lead with two goals in the middle 17 minutes. Genevieve Henderickson gave Warroad a 2-1 lead at 11:45 in the period when she turned a turnover into a goal over the glove of Cardinal goalie Hailee Bailey. The Warriors eventually extended their lead to 4-1 with power play goals from Kaitlyn Kotlowski and Corneliusen. 

Warroad wasn’t done scoring, as the top-ranked team in the tournament scored three more goals in the third period en route to its 7-1 victory. Hendrickson, Kotlowski and Corneliusen both tallied two goals in the game, while goalie Quinn Kuntz made 13 saves in the victory.

With the win, Warroad advances to the A Championship game, where it will take on No. 2 Breck at 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 24. Alexandria will play Proctor-Hermantown in the third place game set to take place at 9 a.m. the same day. Both games are at Xcel Energy Center.
