After losing to Cretin twice earlier this season, Roseville was able to come away with a victory in the first round of the State Tournament, being led by the combined efforts of junior Jada Hood and sophomore Jayda Johnston. Hood was the team-leader with 18 points, but Johnston was right behind her with 16. Junior Kaylee Nelson joined her teammates in double digits, finishing with 13 points. Johnston and freshman Tamia Ugass were the leading rebounders for the Raiders, each ending with eight.

Cretin-Derham Hall had two players finish in double figures, with junior Frannie Hottinger leading the way, recording a double-double with 21 points and ten rebounds. Teammate Autam Mendez also finished with a double-double, ending with ten points and ten rebounds.

Roseville was the more efficient shooting team throughout the game, connecting on 42.2% of their field goals and 65.2% of their free-throws, compared to Cretin-Derham Hall’s 34.7% field-goal percentage and 47.6% free-throw percentage. Cretin held a slight rebounding edge (34-33), but Roseville capitalized on more of their offensive rebounds scoring five more points of off second chances (14-9).

Roseville scored in the first possession of the game, and led for the majority of the first half. Cretin kept it close though, trailing by five or less, until the final seconds of the half, when Roseville made a layup to lead by six, 29-23, heading into the halftime break.

Roseville was able to hold onto their lead throughout the entire second half, and used a 9-2 run to lead by 11 with 3:21 left in the game. Cretin worked their way back, though, hitting a three with 53 seconds left that got the game within five, but Cretin was unable to score again and Roseville made three free-throws to secure the win.

Roseville will next play Hopkins in the Class 4A semifinals, tomorrow, March 15th, at 8:00 p.m. at the Target Center. Cretin-Derham Hall moves to the consolation bracket and will take on Forest Lake tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. at the Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia University.
