National Signing Day With Eden Prairie's Antonio Montero, Benny Sapp III, Joe Schreiber, etc.

February 07, 2018 03:44 PM

Antonio Montero was Minnesota's Mr. Football for 2017, and now he's signed, sealed and delivered to play at Rice University in Houston starting this summer

Montero, who was offered a preferred walk-on opportunity at the University of Minnesota, felt the full scholarship at Rice was too good to pass up.

"When I went on a visit to Rice University, I fell in love with the school, the team and the area. On the academic side, it's one of the best schools in the country, and as for football. they have a new coaching staff that got coaches from Stanford and Michigan and other top football programs. I knew it was a place I could really excel as a student and as a player," Montero told KSTP.

Among the 20 Eden Prairie students who signed with their respective schools, Benny Sapp III, is set to go to the University of Minnesota to play for P.J. Fleck.

"I'm so excited. I can't wait to get started playing college football. It's been a dream of mine since I was little. It's been hard having to go through some of the injuries that have held me back during my high school career, but I feel great now. I know when the football season comes around I'll be a 100 percent ready to give it my all to the University of Minnesota," Sapp III said.

Sapp III signed with the Gophers back in December. But Eden Prairie made him part of the ceremony on Wednesday.
