Debbie Saunders said that she and Ryan's late dad, Flip, noticed early in life that Ryan would be special. He always had a way of connecting with people, even wanting to share money his grandma gave him at a young age with his siblings so they could get ice cream at Dairy Queen.

Ryan went 17-25 in the last 42-games of the season after taking over for Tom Thibodeau.
