Boys Hockey: Minnetonka Wins Double-OT Epic Over Holy Family

March 01, 2018 02:50 AM

Trailing 4-3 to Holy Family with ten seconds to go in the Section 2AA Final, Minnetonka's Josh Luedtke admits, "the season was flashing before my eyes". But Teddy Lagerback's goal with three seconds remaining in regulation, and Luedtke's game-winner in the second overtime sent the Skippers to a 5-4 win and their sixth State Boys Hockey Tournament appearance.

The Skippers return to the State Tournament for the first time since earning the #1-seed and falling to Edina in the State Championship in 2010.

Luedtke's second goal of the game 11:33 into the second overtime period as he took control of the puck just inside the attacking zone blue line, deked two defenders en route to a spot in front of the Holy Family net.  Amid tight traffic, Luedtke leaned slightly left, drawing Holy Family keeper Conan Hayton slightly to the left post.  That left just enough room for Luedtke to feather a shot into the top right corner, touching off the Skippers' celebration.

Hayton made 52 saves for the Fire who, late in regulation, appeared destined for their first-ever State Tournament berth.  Jack Haley scored twice for Holy Family. Joe Simon and John Simon also scored for the Fire.

Minnetonka outshot Holy Family 57-21 in the game.

In addition to Luedtke and Lagerback's dramatic closing goals, Luke Loheit and Joe Molenaar also scored for Minnetonka.

Pairings for the 2018 State Boys Hockey Tournament will be released on Saturday morning.
