The Blaine Bengals boys hockey team defeated Maple Grove 2-1 Thursday night at Aldrich Arena to win the Section 5AA Championship and advance to the 2019 Boys' State Hockey Tournament.
Maple Grove opened the scoring when Sam Jacobs scored only 17 seconds into the first period. The Crimson held that 1-0 lead into the second period, but Blaine captain Bryce Brodzinki tied the game at 1-1.
Blaine went on a power play in the third period and Carsen Richels' wrister with the man advantage gave the Bengals a 2-1 lead.
Joe Daninger made 32 saves for Blaine and Jack Wieneke stopped 35 of the 37 shots he faced.
