1-on-1 With Gophers Head Coach Lindsay Whalen

Lindsay Whalen did not know exactly what she was getting into when she took over as the head coach of the Gophers women's basketball program. But she knows basketball, she knows the University of Minnesota and she knows how to compete.

Whalen was a coach on the floor when she played for the Gophers and Lynx, but being a true head coach in the college games has been a whole new ballgame.

"As a player, your day off after is off. As a coach it is not off. You have to recap the day before," Whalen told KSTP Sports Director Joe Schmit. "You might be able to take a couple hours and just relax, but for the most part, it's on to the next."

Whalen did not lose a lot when she was playing for the Lynx, but she's already went through one tough spell with the Gophers when they had a stretch where they lost seven of eight games.

"Was it fun at at that point? Probably not every day, not all the time. It's a learning process and it's been a lot of fun recently. Winning is fun."

The Gophers have won their last seven games and are looking like an NCAA Tournament team again.

Whalen was known as an intense competitor on the court and has kept that competitive edge as a coach.

"You have games to get up for. There's a gameplan you put together and you do your best to make sure the players go out and execute that."
