Sen. Amy Klobuchar is expected to make a "major announcement" Sunday.
The Democratic senator is expected to make the announcement during an appearance at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis.
The event, which is open to the public, officially begins at 1:35 p.m. Hot cocoa, cookies, warming stations and live entertainment are part of the day's events.
The event is being held in the midst of speculation Klobuchar may run for president in 2020.
She would join several Democrats who have already announced their 2020 bids, including Sen. Kamala Harris and Sen. Cory Booker. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Sen. Elizabeth Warren have also announced moves toward seeking bids.
In a statement issued Sunday morning, Klobuchar said:
I’m asking you to join us on this campaign. It’s a homegrown one. I don’t have a political machine. I don’t come from money. But what I do have is this: I have grit. I have family. I have friends. I have neighbors. I have all of you who are willing to come out in the middle of the winter, all of you who took the time to watch us today, all of you who are willing to stand up and say people matter.
Klobuchar was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006, becoming Minnesota's first female U.S. senator. She won re-election in 2012 and 2018.
Klobuchar has focused on a variety of issues during her time in office, including working to lower the cost of prescription drugs, strengthening online privacy laws, advocating for adoptive families, increasing educational and job opportunities and improving election security.
