Osmek Latest Candidate in Crowded Race for Governor

Republican state Senator Dave Osmek of Mound is the 13th major party candidate to declare a candidacy for the 2018 Minnesota governor's race.

"I've met with taxpayers around Minnesota and asked them what they are looking for in the next governor of our state," Osmek said. "What I've heard back is that they are looking for someone who is willing to fight for the average person."

Osmek is the seventh Republican in the race, and there are six Democrats. That already matches the number of candidates who ran in the 2010 primaries for the Republican, Democratic and Independence parties. The Independence Party is no longer a major party in Minnesota.

Who's Running?

Democrat Republican Third Party
Chris Coleman, mayor of St. Paul Christopher Chamberlain Chris Wright (Legal Marijuana Now Party)
Tina Liebling, state rep. Matt Dean, state rep. Kiel Briggs (Independence Party)
Erin Murphy, state rep. Keith Downey, former state GOP chair, former state rep.
Rebecca Otto, state auditor Blake Huffman, Ramsey County commissioner
Paul Thissen, state rep. Jeff Johnson, Hennepin County commissioner, former state rep.
Tim Walz, U.S. rep. David Osmek, state senator
Phillip Parrish, Naval Reserve intelligence commander

"There seems to be a rush into the governor's race on both the Democratic and Republican sides," says Larry Jacobs of the University of Minnesota Humphrey Institute. "Clearly both parties see the governor's race as wide open."

It is the first time since 2010 the incumbent isn't running for re-election. Democrat Mark Dayton announced last year he would not run for a third term.
