Meet the Congress Members: Democrat Ilhan Omar

November 14, 2018 06:12 PM

Ilhan Omar is about to begin work in Congress just a few miles from her first home in the U.S.

"The community over in Arlington, Virginia is where I first arrived here in the United States," said the newly-elected U.S. Rep. "I think it's an example of hope to now have me 20 years later coming here as a Representative for our great state."

Omar will become the first Somali-American in Congress and one of just two Muslim women.

And she is keenly aware she is now a role model for many.

"It's important that we are not so focused on being a first ourselves, but (that we) recognize the importance of it because that means that you have a responsibility to keep that door open.

"Wide-open for so many more to come through so we are not talking about 'firsts' anymore."
