KSTP/SURVEYUSA: 44 percent of Minnesotans surveyed favor impeachment

Updated: November 18, 2019 06:26 PM

It's not a majority, but 44 percent of Minnesotans say based on what they have learned so far, the U.S. House of Representatives should impeach President Trump, according to a new KSTP/SurveyUSA poll. Another 37 percent say they should not vote to impeach, and 19 percent are undecided.

"Somewhere between 40 and 50 percent there's a big group that really dislikes the president and wants him out of office, but it's not a big majority," says Carleton College Political Scientist Steven Schier.

He says the fact there are so many undecided Minnesotans shows the complexity of the case against the president.

"Nineteen percent uncertain because, for a lot of people, this is a very confusing situation," Schier said.

If a Senate impeachment trial were held today, 45 percent of Minnesotans surveyed say there is "enough evidence to convict." Another 40 percent say there's not enough evidence, and 15 percent are uncertain.

The president's major problem in Minnesota is a plummeting "favorability" rating from already low levels. According to the poll, 53 percent of Minnesotans either view him unfavorably or extremely unfavorably.  That compares to 31 percent with favorable or extremely favorable views of the president, and 12 percent who remain neutral.

"The favorability numbers are among the worst I've ever seen in Minnesota for an incumbent president in Minnesota, and that's a big problem for him," Schier says.

However, Schier says favorability ratings are not the same as job performance ratings.

"The question in this survey is, 'What do you think of him as a person,'" Schier says. "That's not the same question as, 'What do you think of the job he's doing?' That could be a very different result."
