Monday, candidates for Minnesota’s U.S. Senate seat made one last appeal to voters before Election Day.

The race between incumbent Sen. Tina Smith, a Democrat, and Republican challenger Jason Lewis has tightened in the last few weeks.

Smith spent Monday as the headliner of a barnstorming campaign swing.

"You have people like Donald Trump and my opponent that are all about fear and division and chaos," Smith said. "And they use ear in order to turn us against one another."

Lewis, who gave an interview at his home, said he believes it’s the Democrats who are fear-mongering.

"I think the other side has politicized or weaponized the coronavirus for political purposes," he said. And I think young people all over Minnesota are saying ‘Don’t take our futures away,’" Lewis said.

Lewis was not campaigning Monday, as he is still recovering from emergency hernia surgery. However, he said he is confident in what his campaign accomplished before the surgery setback.

Smith said she does not underestimate her opponent.

"We never take any vote for granted," Smith said. "I certainly wish him the best and I hope him a speedy recovery. We are out just talking to every voter we can up until the last minute."
