October 10, 2018 08:57 AM

Two men running for Minnesota’s 8th Congressional seat, DFL-backed Joe Radinovich and the GOP candidate Pete Stauber, shared their emotional stories of coming face-to-face with gun violence when asked in a debate how they would tackle gun the issue in America.

Stauber, a retired Duluth police officer was shot in the head while off-duty, and had a gun pointed at him that misfired while he was on-duty.

During Monday night's debate Stauber told the audience he stands behind the Second Amendment.

"An individual pulled a gun on me, pulled the trigger, by grace of God it malfunctioned," he said. "I was fighting for my life, I still support our Second Amendment.”

Stauber, however, did say he does want some to not have access to weapons.

Stauber Wins GOP Vote in 8th District Primary; Radinovich Earns DFL Nomination

Radinovich, a former DFL lawmaker in St. Paul, told the crowd his mother died from gun violence at the hands of a relative when he was younger.

“Gun violence has had an impact on my life,” Radinovich said. “I understand that not every problem we’re dealing with when it comes to gun violence is the same.”

Radinovich wants background checks, bans on bump-stocks and high-capacity magazines.

The candidates were asked by the moderator, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS anchor Kevin Doran, about balancing the benefits of industry while preserving the natural environment of the northland.

“It’s extremely important,” Stauber said. “Using 21st-century technology we can both mine and have a pristine and clean environment …I trust our miners that they can do it right.”

“(What) I think we need to do is make sure these companies are able to meet or exceed every standard that is in state and federal statute,” Radinovich said. “We need to recognize the economic benefit these jobs can provide.”
