Walz Sworn In as Governor; 2019 Legislative Session Begins

It has been a busy week of political transition in Minnesota. The Tim Walz era has officially begun and the 2019 legislative session is moving full steam ahead. This legislative session will be one to watch as Gov. Walz and new legislative leaders try to avoid the gridlock that has plagued legislatures of the past.

Walz was sworn in Monday, along with Minnesota's other constitutional officers. In his address, he promised to be a governor who works for everyone regardless of who they voted for in November.

DFL and GOP lawmakers laid out their top priorities for the 2019 legislative session. DFLers want to focus on issues like education, health care, economic prosperity and infrastructure. Republicans say they want to make tax relief and tax conformity a top priority this session.

Lawmakers Remember State Rep. Tom Rukavina

This week, House lawmakers took a moment to remember former DFL State. Rep. Tom Rukavina, who passed away Monday at the age of 68. On Thursday, lawmakers from both parties wore union, "Made in America" buttons with an image of Rukavina. They also spoke fondly of the passionate lawmaker from the Iron Range.

Funeral services for Rukavina will be held Saturday in his hometown of Virginia, Minnesota.
