At Issue -- August 11: Gun control rally, MnLARS replaced and help on the way for diabetics

Gun Control
Hundreds of Minnesotans are calling for stronger gun laws in the state. They rallied earlier this week to honor the 31 victims involved in the mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas. Governor Tim Walz is also pushing for hearings on gun control this fall. Universal background check and red flag law legislation did not pass last session. Republican Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka said he wants to keep the focus on mental health issues.

MnLARS Replaced
The problem-plagued "MnLARS" system, has officially been replaced. The state has signed a contract with Colorado-based "Fast Enterprises". The project will be completed in two phases over the next two years and will not affect current services. Minnesotans have faced delays in processing driver's licenses, titles and registration since MnLARS launched two years ago.

Hope for diabetes patients?
Diabetes patients who might not be able to afford the high cost of insulin could soon have some relief. Medica has announced it will cap insulin costs at $25 per month for people with individual and company-based health plans. Blue Cross Blue Shield says it has a benefit called a preventive drug list that can provide low-cost insulin with no co-pay, but only for employer-based insurance at companies that opt into the program. UCare also said it is evaluating ways to help members afford insulin prior to the next open enrollment period.

The Capitol Ups Its Accessibility
The Minnesota State Capitol is now more accessible for people with disabilities. Two new ramps have been installed after a four-year restoration project at the Capitol. They're located on the south side of the building. The new ramps provide full access to the popular gardens. All Minnesotans are welcome to experience the ramps.
