Sen. Amy Klobuchar Prepares to Announce Plans for 2020, Expected to Get into Presidential Race

Minnesota U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar is widely expected to get into the 2020 race for President this weekend. She is set to make a "major announcement" Sunday at Boom Island in Minneapolis.

Klobuchar would be the tenth Democrat to enter the race, and the field is only expected to get more crowded in the coming weeks and months. Many analysts say her more moderate-leaning positions might be an asset on the campaign trail, especially in battleground states in middle America. On the flip side, some analysts say because Klobuchar is not well-known on a national level, she may have difficulty attracting major donors to support her campaign.

Sen. Klobuchar will make her announcement on her plans for 2020 Sunday at 1:30 p.m. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS will stream her announcement live online. Watch for complete coverage of her decision Sunday evening on 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.

Republicans Gain Seat in Minn. Senate Following Special Election

Republicans have added one more seat to their narrow majority in the Minnesota Senate. On Tuesday, Republican Jason Rarick won a special election in Senate District 11, which covers parts of Carlton, Pine, Kanabec and St. Louis Counties. The seat had been held, previously by Tony Lourey, a DFL senator who resigned to become the Commissioner of the Department of Human Services.

Republicans now have a 35-32 advantage in the Minnesota Senate, after having a one-seat majority for the past two years. Majority Leader Paul Gazelka says even though that new majority is only two seats, it will make a big difference when it comes to getting his party's work done and advocating for bills and policy positions Republicans support.
