Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 25 this year. Here's a guide to Memorial Day weekend weather and traffic to help you plan.

Memorial Day Events

Due to COVID-19, there will be some virtual events throughout the state to honor those who died while serving as part of the nation's armed forces:

Memorial Day at Fort Snelling

The Fort Snelling National Cemetery, in St. Paul, has posted a pre-recorded video tribute to its Facebook page, to honor those who have served.

Memorial Day Flyover

The Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing is planning a special Memorial Day flyover at 18 Twin Cities-area locations. Monday's flyover will feature a World War II B-25 bomber called Miss Mitchell. The group was able to quickly raise its $3,500 fundraising goal online to make it happen. The route includes downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, area cemeteries, hospitals and parks. View the schedule here.

Memorial Day at Lakewood Cemetery

Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis will be open to the public during Memorial Day weekend, but its annual ceremony will be pre-recorded and posted to its website on Saturday, May 23 at noon. Those visiting the cemetery can consider honoring those who have died by adding a ribbon to the Living Memory Tree.

'Never Forget Memorial Day Concert' by Luke Spehar

Originally planned for Mears Park in St. Paul, Luke Spehar’s "Never Forget Memorial Day Concert" will be streamed live on his website instead, at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 25. The event is free, and donations will be given to local military nonprofits, including Acres for Life Therapy and Wellness Center and Every Third Saturday.

Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs’ Memorial Day Program

In place of the live events at Minnesota’s state veterans cemeteries, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) will hold a virtual Memorial Day program instead. MDVA has partnered with Twin Cities PBS-TPT to create the 30-minute program titled "Always Remember: A Minnesota Tribute to Veterans We’ve Lost." The program will include remarks from Gov. Tim Walz and Commissioner Larry Herke, personal stories about those who have died in service, and a traditional rifle salute. The program will air on TPT’s Minnesota channel at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 25.

Boating Safety

Will you be spending your weekend on a lake?

State officials want boaters to keep safety on their minds as they head out.

You can get information from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on life jacket requirements, boating laws and regulations, boat and water safety education, and lake and river restrictions. Click here to check out the DNR's Boat and Water Safety page.

Additionally, officials ask boaters to maintain the recommended social distance while boating this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
