Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7, this year. Here's a guide to Labor Day weekend weather and traffic to help you plan.

Labor Day during COVID-19

This year, events to recognize Labor Day may be different, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gov. Tim Walz and state health leaders requested Minnesotans to remain vigilant during the holiday weekend, encouraging Minnesotans to avoid large gatherings, practice social distancing, wash hands regularly and wear masks.

Meanwhile, national health experts have urged Americans to stay vigilant and avoid large gatherings during Labor Day, after seeing a rise in virus infections following Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

Boating Safety

Will you be spending your weekend on a lake? State officials want boaters to keep safety on their minds as they head out.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports the two most common causes of boating fatalities in the state are capsizing and falling overboard.

Boaters are asked to follow these tips:

  • Wear a life jacket
  • Distribute weight evenly in the boat and abide by the boat's weight limits
  • Have a way to communicate; boaters should let others know where they are going and when they plan to return
  • Watch weather reports to avoid shifting winds or storms.

You can get information from the DNR on life jacket requirements, boating laws and regulations, boat and water safety education, and lake and river restrictions. Click here to check out the DNR's Boat and Water Safety page.
