Police are investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian Thursday night in northeast St. Paul.

Callers reported a vehicle struck a woman at about 5:15 p.m. near the intersection of North Manton Street and Larpenteur Avenue East, St. Paul Police said.

When police and medics arrived, they found a gravely injured woman lying in the eastbound lane of Larpenteur Avenue. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the vehicle, a 35-year-old Maplewood man, is cooperating with the investigation, according to police.

Preliminary information indicates the woman appeared to have been trying to cross Larpenteur Avenue when she may have fallen and was hit by the eastbound car. She was later identified by police as Michelle Lanee English, of St. Paul.

As of Thursday night, investigators said they don't believe the driver was impaired at the time of the crash. No arrests have been made.
