A woman died from her injuries overnight after a shooting Saturday night in Minneapolis.

According to the Minneapolis Police Department, shortly after 8 p.m., officers in the area of 26th Avenue and Dupont Avenue reported hearing the sounds of gunfire and heard bullets "whizzing through the air" by them.

Officers responded to the area and were then flagged down by a male driver at 24th Avenue and Bryant Avenue North. The car had bullet holes in it.

According to police, inside the vehicle, officers found a woman believed to be in her 20s in the passenger seat and a child under 5 years old, both covered in blood.

One officer went to help the child and figure out if the child had been shot or not, police said.

The other officers went to render aid to the woman while others arrived and helped the uninjured driver.

Police said the woman has no pulse or respiration. Officers began CPR and additional lifesaving measures. A pulse was regained, and she was transported to North Memorial Medical Center by paramedics. The child was found only to have glass shard injuries and had not been shot. The child was transported by another ambulance to North Memorial.

The preliminary investigation indicates that an altercation between the male driver and people in another vehicle occurred in the area of 26th Avenue and Emerson Avenue. Shots were fired, which struck the victim’s vehicle on the passenger’s side where the woman was sitting.

Minneapolis police were notified Sunday morning that the woman died while in the hospital overnight.

"It’s horrible," John Elder, MPD Public Information Officer said. "Bullets are not discriminatory. They will hit whatever is in it’s path. Bullets do not drop onto the ground after it misses it’s intended target."

The case was treated as a likely homicide due to the level of her injuries and homicide detectives continue to work the case.

Minneapolis Police Department Crime Lab personnel responded and processed the scene, collecting evidence.

The identity of the deceased, along with the nature and causes of death, will be released by the medical examiner in the days to come.
