Snow days can be bad for businesses, although not quite as bad as they used to be, according to a University of St. Thomas professor.
David Vang, a professor in the school's finance department, said that while some businesses will always take a hit in inclement weather, technology enables others to reap the reward. For example, customers may not go out to shop at a brick-and-mortar store during a snow day, but they may shop online instead.
"Being confined to the home does not mean that they're not spending money," Vang said. "If you live in Minnesota, you better be prepared for having backup plans when the weather's bad."
Still, some business owners say they're taking a hit.
"Snow days, we always see a dramatic drop," explained Matthew Craddock, a manger at Hodges Bend, a new restaurant in St. Paul.
He said the restaurant has typically seen large crowds at lunch time, but that the numbers plummet when there's a snow day.
"People are like, 'Oh we can't drive,' or, 'Oh, we can't make it there, it's too slick,'" Craddock said.
Now, he added, he's just looking forward to spring.
