A Wisconsin man who was charged in a reckless homicide investigation in July faces new charges for reportedly attempting to escape from the St. Croix County Jail.

According to a criminal complaint, 37-year-old Brandon Michael Lieffring has been charged with repeat attempted escape and repeat criminal damage to property.

The complaint details the following:

On July 31 at about 6 p.m., officers were approached by an inmate who said Lieffring and another inmate were working on something in Lieffring's cell and the inmate said there was reason to believe they were planning an escape.

Officers investigated the cell and found the grate around the ceiling's smoke detector wasn't secured and the middle bar over the cell's window had been cut and pulled from the window to create a gap.

When questioned, an inmate identified as being involved in the situation with Lieffring said Lieffring had once asked him whether he thought the grate on the ceiling could be removed. The inmate also said Lieffring had said he wanted to cut through the bars on the window with parts from the grate.

Lieffring had asked the inmate to escape with him. The inmate told authorities he gave Lieffring some advice but said he himself was not going to attempt to escape. The inmate told authorities it was Lieffring's objective to escape.

Other inmates reported hearing loud sounds and the sounds of metal coming from Lieffring's cell.

Lieffring was charged in July after being involved in a crash that killed a motorcyclist.
