A Hutchinson man was arrested Wednesday after he sped away from a traffic stop with an officer hanging on to the driver’s side window of his pickup.

A video posted to social media shows a squad car ramming the suspect’s pickup in a parking lot while the officer appears to have his arm stuck in the window of the vehicle. The pickup then drives in reverse toward what appears to be another officer who is standing in the vicinity.

The truck then drives off with the officer still hanging on the window, and two other officers try to chase on foot. Seconds later, the truck is seen going at a high rate of speed with the officer still in tow.

The traffic stop precipitated after police responded to a report of a man assaulting a Menard’s employee with some lumber just before 2 p.m. The man left the store and was later spotted at a Walmart down the road.

Police attempted a traffic stop in the Hutchinson Mall parking lot, but the man kept driving for another block before stopping. Shortly after, the events shown in the video took place.

While the officer was hanging on to the truck, the suspect hit him in the head with a hammer, police said.

The officer was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

Luke Oeltjenbruns, 61, is being held in the McLeod County Jail on probable cause first-degree assault in connection with the incident. He has not been formally charged.
