Video captures wild shootout in St. Paul

Updated: September 09, 2019 05:28 AM

At least a dozen gunshots were fired, in broad daylight, and a video of the incident obtained by 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS was captured by a doorbell video camera on St. Paul's East side.

The shooting happened around 12:15 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Bush Avenue and Duluth Street when the occupants of two cars start shooting at each other. The shootout was caught on video by a doorbell camera installed on the front door of Karen Thornberg's house.

"It was very scary because it was the middle of the day, and kids were outside everywhere," Thornberg said. "Three bullets ended up in the home of my next-door neighbor, and they had three children inside."

Police: 1 dead in St. Paul shooting

KSTP talked with the family of the house hit by those stray bullets, and they said one of their children is only two years old and one of the bullets lodged in the wall of a bedroom just 6 inches above the bed where their 7-year-old son sleeps.

Thornberg said there were more than a dozen children playing outside when the shootout started, and she believes it is miraculous that no one was hurt after more than a dozen gunshots were exchanged.

"One of the cars in the shooting was pulled over by police in front of my house," Thornberg said. "And there was a baby in the backseat of the car."

Thornberg and two of her neighbors told KSTP the neighborhood is "out of control," and they were all planning on moving out of the area because of recent gun violence.

"There has been too many incidents of violence around here, and now it's happening in the middle of the day with kids outside," Thornberg said. "And now the mayor wants to cut the police budget which just makes no sense."
